How to Create Your Own Website

Vendors

Steps

  1. Register a domain name, Example http://www.melzacki.com. You can register a domain through many companies. I have registered domains through Yahoo, Network Solutions, and Hostmonster. Registering the domain with the company that will provide the hosting will make some of the setup easier. Many hosting providers will offer a free domain registration if you agree to have them host your website for a period of time.
  2. Select a company to host your website. I use Hostmonster.com to host my websites and have been very pleased with pricing, reliability, and the services they provide. The hosting company will also be the company that will allow you to create e-mail accounts with your domain name. Example, webmaster@melzacki.com.
  3. Plan the design of your website. Give some thought on what you will be using the site for.
  4. Select software to build and run your website. The software you select will depend on a few factors.
    1. Purpose of the Site
    2. Budget
    3. Technical knowledge of the administrator

WordPress is one of the most used blogging tools. It is very easy to use and there are thousands of add-ons for the software. Most of items are free. Please consider donating some amount of money to the development team if you find the software useful. WordPress also has great documentation on how to use it.

  5. Build your website. Hostmonster provides scripts that make it very easy to load and configure WordPress.
  6. Analyze your website. If you would like to see what visitors are doing when they come to your website, Google provides a free web analytics tool. By analyzing the data from Google Analytics, you can make changes to your website that will enhance the visitor’s experience.
  7. Maintain your website.
